Whitings Neck and Indian River Caves with Dragon Breath Grotto 12-27-07
We did a little day trip to Whitings Neck cave as the second trip for Dragon Breath Grotto. For those that know this cave I don't have to describe it. For those who haven't been there, check it out sometime. It has some interesting climbs and scrambles and can be a fun workout. It's been know for a very long time and gets a good bit of traffic. While quite worn it has a relatively low amount of graffiti and trash, but most of the pretties have been long gone.
Not every one in our group has had vertical experience, so we skipped the back of cave, but did take a look and talked about what was necessary to get everyone up to speed to do that section next time. We have a plan and will fine tune and work it latter this year.
In addition to the first entrance we poked in the second entrance and most took a through trip back to the first entrance. Some of us turned back and took the time to relax and enjoy the exceptionally fair weather for December.
A little further down the path is Indian River Cave. It's in the same condition as Whitings Neck, but there were some Big Brown bats in there. For me, one of the best attractions to this cave is sitting at the entrance and looking over the view of the river.
Over all we were about four hours underground. We got out of there just as the sun was going down. It was a great day caving and gave us ideas of what to do for next time.
Here's the rest of the pictures from the day's trip.
